The Lotterywest Grant

The Interim Grant

An interim grant of $100,428 was granted by Lotterywest in March 2005 to ensure that work on microfilming newspapers and digitising deteriorating negatives was undertaken for four months pending the decision on the HRRC main project application. The HRRC interim project successfully ensured:

Newspapers

The preservation and microfilming of fifteen (15) reels of the West Australian newspaper dating from January 1912 to January 1914.

Photographic Negatives

The assessment and scanning/digitisation of 5,024 'at risk' photographic negatives with 638 of these images now available online.

Films from the State Film Archives

Although funding was not granted in the interim project for film preservation, the State Library of WA provided in-kind assessment and preparation of 12 films that will be preserved with funding from the main project grant.

The Main HRRC Project

Hon. Premier Dr Geoff Gallop and Dr Pamela Stathem-Drew with the Lotterywest grant cheque

The main HRRC project was approved in June 2005 and, on 16 September 2005, Premier Geoff Gallop officially presented a $3 million cheque to Pamela Statham-Drew President of HRRC in recognition of its successful application to the Lotterywest Special Initiatives Grants program.

The significant $3 million Lotterywest grant will go towards the rescue of over 700,000 pages of newsprint, 75,000 negatives and 150 film titles - an amazing project that will be completed over two years.

The Lotterywest grant will fund the salaries of a Project Manager and team of specialist staff (see organisational chart below) and the State Library of WA and Department of Culture and the Arts will purchase state of the art equipment and provide the support services needed for the project. The HRRC project is to run for two years and operates from the State Library's premises.
