About Us
The Historical Records Rescue Consortium (HRRC) aims to preserve historical records held in the J S Battye Library of West Australian History for the immediate and long-term benefit of the entire Western Australian community.
Through HRRC a $3 million Lotterywest Grant has been awarded to rescue and make accessible the most at-risk and in-demand historic newspapers, photographs and films in the Battye Library.
The History of HRRC
In 2003 a consortium of key stakeholders interested in the preservation of historical records and the activities of Battye Library was formed with the objective:
To submit an application to Lotterywest for funding to rescue and make available the most at risk and in demand historical records held in the J S Battye Library of West Australian History, and to effectively manage the funds granted.
HRRC consists of representatives from:
- Friends of Battye Library Inc.
- Royal Western Australian Historical Society Inc.
- Western Australian Genealogical Society Inc.
- History Council of Western Australia Inc.
- Professional Historians Association (WA) Inc.
- Oral History Association of Australia (WA Branch) Inc.
- Indigenous community
- State Library Custodians Inc.
- Ethnic Communities Council Inc.
- History Teachers' Association of WA
- Australian Mining History Association Inc.
- Private donors
As part of its submission, in 2004 HRRC engaged in a consultation process to ensure community support for funding for preservation of historical records and to help gain a better understanding of those records most in public demand so as to prioritise materials earmarked for conservation. This process was aided by a grant of $24,000 from Lotterywest to engage consultants to work with HRRC to undertake statewide community consultation.
The major outcome of the consultation was overwhelming support from the community that it was very important or important to save historical material in the Battye Library.
As part of the process, HRRC was also able to establish priorities to rescue newspapers, photographic negatives and films from the State Film Archives.
The HRRC application to the Lotterywest Special Initiatives Grants program was submitted on 1 June 2004. The uniqueness and complexity of the HRRC Project meant that additional time was needed to assess the proposal and in March 2005 an interim grant was awarded by Lotterywest to HRRC pending the decision on the main project application.
The main HRRC project was approved in June 2005. See About the Lotterywest Grant.
